Understanding Lokayukta and Lokpal.
Lokayukta and Lokpal are two distinct anti-corruption bodies in India. While both are designed to investigate and punish corruption in public offices, they have some differences in their scope and jurisdiction.
Lokayukta is a state-level anti-corruption ombudsman in India, established under the Lokayukta Act of each state. It is responsible for investigating complaints of corruption and maladministration against public officials and elected representatives, including the Chief Minister and Ministers of the state government. Lokayukta has the power to investigate, prosecute, and recommend action against corrupt officials.
On the other hand, Lokpal is a national-level anti-corruption ombudsman in India, established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013. It is responsible for investigating complaints of corruption against public officials and elected representatives at the national level, including the Prime Minister and Ministers of the Central Government. Lokpal also has the power to investigate, prosecute, and recommend action against corrupt officials.
The main difference between the two is that Lokpal operates at the national level, while Lokayukta operates at the state level. Another difference is that the jurisdiction of Lokpal extends to all public officials and elected representatives at the national level, while Lokayukta’s jurisdiction is limited to the state government.
The relevance of both Lokayukta and Lokpal lies in their role as independent institutions that investigate and punish corruption in public offices. Corruption is a major issue in India, and the establishment of these bodies is seen as a significant step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in government. These bodies provide an avenue for citizens to report cases of corruption and seek action against corrupt officials.
